The Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme

The construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme led to a dramatic increase in the population of the Tumbarumba Region in the 1960s. It was at this time that a high school was established and a major expansion occurred at Tumbarumba Hospital.

Khancoban was originally built to accommodate workers and their families on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The lovely Lady Hudson rose garden in the town is a memorial to these workers.

Murray 1 Power Station, on the Alpine Way near Khancoban, is the second largest station in the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Snowy Hydro has commenced major overhaul works at Murray 1 Power Station as part of the multi-million Scheme Modernisation Program.  As a result, they have temporarily closed the Murray 1 Visitors’ Centre.

As an alternative during the Murray 1 Power Station works, Snowy Hydro have opened a Temporary Visitors' Centre and Power Station Inspections at Murray 2 Power Station.

Located at the end of Murray 2 Power Station Road, just 5 minutes from Khancoban, Murray 2 Power Station provides visitors with a unique experience. Grab a light refreshment from the temporary visitors Centre and talk with the friendly customer service Team.

Murray 2 Power Station Inspections occur at 11am and 2pm daily.

Where: Murray 2 Power Station, Power Station Rd, Khancoban

Open:   9am - 4pm Monday to Friday

10am - 4pm Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays

N.B. During Winter (May – September), the centre is CLOSED on weekends.

Closed: Christmas Day, Anzac Day & weekends during Winter

Cost:      Entry is free of charge

Please note that around May and December Snowy Hydro close all Centres for several days in order to complete compulsory training. If you are planning a visit during this time, please call 1800 623 776 to check whether they will be open on your intended visiting day.
